Giant Silkmoth

Wildlife PanamaThis species is called Silkmoth (Rothschildia spp.) because the larvae finish their metamorphosis in a silky cocoon. With a wingspan of 10 to 12 centimeters, the Giant Silkmoth is one of the largest moths in the world.

Something that catches your attention when you look at this really big moth are the clear windows in their wings.  Those windows are the characteristic that gives the moth its common name in Spanish, “cuatro ventanas,” which means four windows.

With a close look at this beautiful animal it is possible to appreciate the tiny scales that cover the wings.  The “windows” have a different type of scale which causes them to be transparent.
